The scale of IT investment relative to other major operating and capital expenses such as raw materials, labor, equipment and real estate, cannot be over- or under- estimated. Indeed, IT investments are now fundamental to the valuation and viability of corporations. Despite the economic concerns, the global enterprise IT spend growth is expected to stay at about 3.3% according to a recent worldwide survey conducted by Gartner in 1Q 2008. With this high-profile, there is an expectation that IT will generate an adequate return on investment, economic value and demonstrable value to the business. However, can IT actually deliver on these promises and live up to its potential? YES. Many corporations in multiple industries have unequivocally used IT and information to create enormous corporate value.

Some specific examples of corporate IT value creation include:

  • Wal-Mart - The company relies on efficient IT services and targeted flow of information to be a retail sector leader in customer knowledge, supply chain management, and operations. IT is a key reason why Wal-Mart is able to consistently execute its “low price everyday” business strategy.

  • Capital One Financial Corporation - In the financial services sector, Capital One developed its Information Based Strategy (IBS). This model combines information and technology to deliver customized, highly-targeted financial products to consumers.

  • Apple - In the consumer market Apple developed an integrated content management strategy leveraging the iTunesTM advanced technology platform to provide a breakthrough customer experience. This strategy not only drove the iPodTM sales, but also other Apple products, further enhancing corporate value creation and expanding the Apple brand.
